Most of us often confuse cement with concrete as they are very closely related to each other. Cement is a binding substance which, when mixed with various other materials will bind & hold them tight together where as on the other hand concrete is a building material mix comprising of sand, gravel combined with cement and water to bind. Concrete is a very hard stone like substance often used as a primary building component in various architectural constructions. Concrete Cutting Melbourne experts presents some facts about Cement:

History of Cement- The word ‘Concrete’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Concretus’ which means “compact or condensed”. The Egyptians are said to have invented the early version of cement with a mixture of lime, sand and gravel containing gypsum which they used in building the famous pyramids. The Romans engineers also remarkably used cement like material to built many huge domes and concrete architectures such as Pantheon, Colosseum etc. In the medieval time the masons and the engineers often used this earlier cement containing gypsum to built canal, fortresses, harbors and ship building facilities. In the late 18th century the French & British engineers started experimenting and later developed the Portland Cement that we all use today.

Portland Cement- In 19th century a British mason known as Joseph Aspdin invented the present day cement by heating a mixture of clay and limestone and making it into a fine powder which when mixed with water solidifies and forms a very hard structure. This was World’s first hydraulic cement.

Portland cement is the most common type of cement used around the world in the production of concrete for building & construction purposes.

Forms & Types- Cement comes in two forms Hydraulic and Non-Hydraulic cement. Hydraulics cement when mixed with water, the hydration chemical reaction between them hardens the mixture resulting into a rock solid water resistant structure which is mostly used for any kind of construction purpose. Non-Hydraulics cements doesn’t reacts to water and thus they do not solidifies when exposed to water so they are seldom used as a building material.

The most common type of Cement today is the Ordinary Portland Cement made by grinding s aluminosilicate minerals and sintered limestone and into a very fine powder. They have very high compression strength and very fast drying rate which makes them very ideal for architectural constructions and generally used in production of concrete, mortar, grout, and stucco.

How to Waterproof Residential Foundations

Ever wondered how to make your residential foundation waterproof or water resistant to prevent the transmission of both water and vapor, to keep the concrete strong and water tight. In the earlier days traditional methods were used for waterproofing by using hand applied solvent-based asphalt product but they would only create a damp-proof environment and not complete waterproofing the foundations.Over the last ten years the construction & concrete cutting Melbourne industry has made remarkable technological advances and now a days very advanced waterproofing methods & materials are used.

Various Types Of Waterproofing Materials

Basic materials that are available today for waterproofing :

Solvent-based asphalt emulsion.  This solvent is generally sprayed or applied with hand trowels which is heated to make a spray-able liquid.Very popular in the earlier times but as of today very rarely used.

Rubberized asphalt.  The most commonly used waterproofing substance either as “peel and stick” sheet material or as a spray-able liquid.

Rubber.  A sprayed material, made from a mixture of synthetic polymer and a chemical solvent which can be applied at temperatures as low as 17° F because of its liquid based state.

Polyethylene. A three-layer sheet membrane system is made by using polyethylene.

Bentonite.  Bentonite clay is also extensively used to prevent the flow of water. Bentonite when mixed with water, expands and becomes a thick gel like substance.

Spray-able Membranes Installation

When spray-able membranes are used concretes are not required to be cured before installation. Its convenient to use the spray-able membrane.

Sheet Membranes Installation

Construction contractors who doesn’t prefer or own spray equipments, they generally go for “peel and stick” products.

Oil Based Waterproofing

Its like a primer which is primarily used to prevent water leakage from roofs after construction.

Have you recently spent a huge amount on the sidewalks and now cracks are emerging onto the surface? Ever wondered why did that happened and how can you fix the concrete cracks or avoid it in the future without harming the trees planted around?

Damage to Sidewalk & Trees –

The roots of trees that grows under sidewalks often cracks or lifts the pavements thereby causing a situation of tripping hazard. The supporting roots of a tree that started growing under or next to the sidewalk always follow the cracks on it to find air and water and in turn its creates and enlarges the cracks leading to the damage of the sidewalk concrete. Likewise, to repair or avoid the sidewalk when you cut the supporting roots, it may cause the tree to die and tree loses its mechanical support.

Various ways to avoid damage to the Sidewalk and the trees around.

1.When you are planting new trees, plant them at-least 3 feet away from the pavement. Trees which might grow up to 30 feet in size should be planted 3-4 feet away from the paved areas and for trees growing 50 feet or more there should be a minimum distance of 8 feet between the sidewalk and the tree.

2.You can also trim the roots but its a very complex method you need to be very careful of not damaging the tree. Never try to cut the larger roots as they are the major mechanical support as well as the carrier of nutrients and water. Always cut the root as clean as possible and as far away from the trunk.

3.You can always opt for modifications which can be done under the pavement or just next to it to reduce root growth by installing root barriers alongside the sidewalk or beneath the pavement concrete you can install a root excluding base. Root barriers such as a simple wall made of plastic or other impermeable material planted at-least 18 inches deep to divert the growing direction downwards or else copper or nylon screen to allow passing of only water and nutrients but not the roots. Many people also use root inhibiting herbicides.

4.By building pavement bridges or simply raising the sidewalks over the roots to allow root growth beneath. These pavement bridges are supported by concrete piers near the tree.

5. In case of minor damages and movements you can always bridge the small gaps and create a smooth transition from main sidewalk to broken edges by using asphalt wedge to minimize the tripping hazards. You can also grind down the raised edge if the displacement is less than one inch.

In other cases you can also think of redesigning a portion of the pavement to curve around the obstacle but always remember to leave enough room for the roots to breath.

Ever wondered why does concrete crack ?

Concrete, which is known for its strength and durability, is the most commonly used building material. Concrete is made from a mixture of Portland cement, sand and water to construct architectural structures, foundations, walls, pavements, bridges etc. But d0 you ever wonder why does concrete show damage in the form of cracks, which can range from light surface fractures to holes that are large enough to make a structure unusable?.

The various factors that normally cause concrete to crack are –

Shrinkage : It occurs as the material dries. When concrete cures, the water mixed with the cement and sand begins to evaporate leaving empty voids in concrete structures, making them weak and they start shrink. The tension on weak materials and resistance restrained by the surrounding materials leads to cracks.

Temperature Changes : Shift or variation in temperature causes abnormal expansion and shrinkage between different layers of concrete which cause cracks in large structure and applications.

Lack of Support : Inadequate structural support sometimes causes severe cracks in concrete. Poor structural support is mainly due to poor installation, including improper use of rebar or insufficient form work. In addition, soil erosion due to wind and rain, which leads the soil beneath the concrete slab to shift in position can also cause poor structural support..

Rusting : Almost all the concrete structures contain metal reinforcement which helps in increasing the material’s strength. When these metal reinforcements start to rust, they cause the concrete to expand and as a result hairline cracks and small surface cracks appear.

Spalling : When too much water is added to the concrete mixture, or when the surface layer dries faster than interior layers, hundreds of tiny crack, appear on the surface of the concrete making it rough and flaky.

An Insight About Concrete Drilling

Concrete drilling method is used when exact and accurate circular holes or cuts are required. You can have holes or cuts of almost any diameter easily drilled for making openings for various plumbing, electrical, roofing and necessary HVAC installations. Concrete core drilling is also useful for creating holes for chores like installing load carrying devices, routing cables, placing anchoring bolts, etc.

So, drilling is requisite for a variety of mechanical, electrical and plumbing works and services, along with a number of other applications. The core drilling process is a more precise way of getting all your works in their exact positions the first time, thereby, decreasing the risk of error that can be caused while trying to detect locations through suspended concrete floors & pre cast concrete walls, before they are correctly placed back. While you are using the concrete core drill equipment, it is essential that you wear safety glasses as a precaution. This is necessary because if the pieces of concrete or even the concrete dust get into your eye, health problems may occur and you might need medical aid to remove it. Take proper care as large pieces of concrete have the tendency of causing   permanent blindness. Hence, follow the instructions as well as take all precautions while using it for concrete drilling purposes.
